Hangouts gets a hefty update

Hangouts gets a hefty update

Hangouts is simple, resourceful and very convenient to use. You can even use it for text messaging and Google Voice calls, yet it feels like such a sleek app. Google has done a great job with it, and they are not stopping anytime soon.
The Hangouts app for Android has just been updated with a very hefty update that is also to come to iOS very soon. New features include a set of 16 sticker packs, new video filters for video calls, the ability to add people based on their phone number, easy location sharing and “last seen” timestamps.
By the way, the “last seen” stamps feature, which show you when users were last active, will be rolling out over the coming week. Be patient.
Opinion: I have to say I am most excited about location sharing and the “last seen” feature. I am just not much of a video call and sticker packs guy. Which new features are you most eager to test?

Telltale launches Game of Thrones on Android

Telltale launches Game of Thrones on Android

Everyone has been enjoying the all new Game of Thrones game from Telltale games. The game launched in all platforms last week, while the PS3 got it yesterday. Android was last in line, getting it today, but it’s nice to see that it came so quickly.
All Telltale had told us was that the Google Play Store would see the launch “later this month”. We expected a longer delay, but we are glad to tell you there is no need to wait. You can go get the Game of Thrones game from the Google Play Store at a $4.99 price point.
Opinion: The game is said to capture all sides of the show – both the beauty and the gore. There is also cursing, sex, killing and all that, so get your heart ready for a good emotion roller coaster.

Uber to come pre-installed on Sprint’s Android phones

Uber to come pre-installed on Sprint’s Android phones

Uber may be gaining a lot of enemies lately, but they are also getting new friends. One of them is Sprint, who has partnered with the ride-sharing company. Some of you will not mind this partnership, but some of you will hate it.
In fact, Uber announces that many handsets already have the app pre-installed, and you can start using it during the holidays.
Opinion: This news is all fun and games if you happen to be an Uber user. The rest of us will simply see it as bloatware. An app that is just there, and you likely can’t get rid of.

Vivo x5 Max is now the thinnest smartphone in the world

Vivo x5 Max is now the thinnest smartphone in the world

It seems manufacturers are all about making the thinnest device in the world, and as it turns out, it’s usually a Chinese manufacturer that wins in this battle. This time around we are taking a look at the brand new Vivo X5 Max, which measures in at an incredible 4.75 mm of thickness.
Oh, and that is at its thickest point – the device is actually 3.98 mm at its thinnest. Other specs include a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED 1080p display, a Snapdragon 615 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage and 13MP/5MP cameras.
Opinion: It takes a lot of hard work to make a phone this thin. Especially at this point, when one thinks phones just can’t get any thinner. I just have to wonder how fragile it feels….

OnePlus One can be purchased without an invite for a while

OnePlus One can be purchased without an invite for a while

The OnePlus One is a stunning device. Its specs are amazing and its price is incredible, and that is why it’s so hard to get a hold of one of these devices. Well, OnePlus is feeling jolly this holiday season and they are allowing you to purchase one without an invite.
Purchases are said to arrive by December 25th, but you better hurry. This offer is “ending soon”, so you don’t have much time to make your order. As always, prices start at $299.
Opinion: You really can’t go wrong with this phone if you are looking for a good device on a tight wallet. Not to mention, it’s actually one hell of a device.

Viettel, Vietnam’s largest telco, wants to bring international products into Vietnam

[IMG]In Vietnam, it’s tough to break into the local market with new products. On the legal side, it’s hard to get licenses for specific types of business, to get investment, and to navigate the murky realm of government policy. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t options. How is it that companies like Starbucks, McDonald’s, Samsung, IBM, and Intel are here? These international firms made it work by developing the right relationships. Finding the right partner can go a long way.

Viettel, Vietnam’s largest telco is well aware of that, and is eager to team up with international partners to bring new technology to Vietnam.

Quang Huy, director of new services at Viettel, explains to Tech In Asia, “It’s very hard to bring your products to market in Vietnam, it takes considerable partnerships, logistics, market penetration, and more.” He adds:

At the same time, Vietnam is lacking in innovation. For Viettel, we’re not interested in taking big risks by investing in local startups with untested products. We want to bring established products to market. And Viettel’s willing to put its whole weight behind products we believe could make it big in Vietnam.

This is significant for two reasons. Viettel, Vietnam’s biggest and richest telco, is not interested in innovation from home. In fact, it finds innovation at home lacking and doesn’t want to take the risk of investing in local entrepreneurs. And second, Viettel is eager to bring foreign tech into Vietnam. This is a big door in for foreign tech firms and entrepreneurs who want to access Vietnam but couldn’t figure it out before.

Huy gave several examples of innovations he deemed worthy, like an internet of things tracker for cow grazing and SIM-based automobile tracking. These are the kinds of projects that startups are unable to do, but Viettel can back them with funding or partnership to bring their products to market.

Viettel made $7 billion in revenue in 2013, and has over 40 percent market share of Vietnam’s telco market in terms of subscribers. It is technically under the auspices of the Vietnamese military, and therefore has the ability to build towers in areas across the country where no other telcos can go. This makes Viettel a unique platform for new technologies.

Recently, Viettel has been sending out SMS to promote new services it’s rolling out. This includes online learning, music and video streaming, online banking, and even ecommerce. Some of these new products have not gone smoothly – it is a government institution, after all, and is held back by its own bureaucracy – but Huy is confident in rolling out specific services with technology companies, be it hardware or software.

This post Viettel, Vietnam’s largest telco, wants to bring international products into Vietnam appeared first on Tech in Asia.

HTC Hima flagship will allegedly have a WP version

HTC’s previously rumored, upcoming Hima flagship will have a version with Windows Phone OS. The word about the WP version got out on Twitter by @upleaks, who posted an alleged HTC product roadmap for 2015.
A Windows Phone running variant of the Taiwanese manufacturer next generation flagship should hardly catch anyone by surprise. HTC already did with with the One (M8) for Windows this year.
HTC Hima is rumored to pack a 5.0" 1080p display and Snapdragon 810 chip. The latter offers an octa-core processor with 4 Cortex-A57 cores at 2.0GHz and 4 Cortex-A53 cores at 1.5GHz, Adreno 430 GPU and 3GB or RAM.
HTC will almost certainly announce its next flagship in early 2015. A Windows Phone model will likely at a later stage.

Google Text-to-Speech in Android now supports Hindi

Google has updated the Text-to-Speech app in Google Play, adding support for Hindi and Indonesian languages. The updated version is rolling out now and will reach your Android device in the coming days.
Google Text-to-Speech works in the background and powers the applications to read-aloud the text available on the screen. Many apps like Google Play Books use the feature on Android. So, next time you are planning to read a Hindi or Indonesian book on your Android device, you will be able to use read-aloud function of the Play Books to listen to the book.
Although Google Text-to-Speech is turned-on by default in most Android devices, you can still head over Settings > Language & Input > Text-to-speech to check out the related settings or download voice-packs. At this point, Google is only offering female voice-packs for both Hindi and Indonesian.

U Messenger – Indie app of the day

What is U Messenger?

U Messenger is a messaging platform that has a ton of features. This includes photo sharing, stickers, voice messages, texts, and some more unique features we’ll get into here in a moment. It’s currently free in the Google Play Store.

U Messenger has a lot of features. You can text people like your standard messaging apps or you can send photos like you can in apps like Snapchat. Group messaging is supported for pretty much all features which is a bonus and you can use things like audio messages and stickers which are also nice bonuses. The interface is classy even if it doesn’t follow the Android design guidelines.

By far the most interesting features of U Messenger are the additional features. There is a feature called Recall that allows you to delete messages even after they’re sent. That means if you make a mistake and need to take it back, you have the opportunity to do so. It removes it from both your device and their device. The Break Up feature is an extension of that and deletes all history on both your device and their device.

There is also a self destruct feature that deletes content after a set time frame much like Snapchat and Delay Send which sends messages at specific times or dates. A fun use for Delay Send would be to have a birthday message prepared in advance and the app will send it on its own. When you combine it, you have one of the more complete messaging platforms available.

This is good enough to compete in the messaging space.

PROS
  • All the standard features including voice, text, picture messages, and stickers.
  • Snapchat-style self-destruct messages and Delay Send messages are a nice touch and add depth to the platform.
  • The ability to delete messages from both yours and their devices (and vice versa) is awesome and a consistently sought after feature.
  • Free to use. No in app purchases.
  • Group messaging.
CONS
  • There are some bugs that still need to be worked on including country-specific issues.
  • Prepare to go through that 'hey, you should use this messaging app' discussion with your friends.
  • The interface is good but it could be better.
8.0
Overall, it’s worth trying this out. As with any other messaging platform, you’ll have to convince your friends and family to try it along with you but that’s a hurdle of all messaging platforms. There are a lot of solid features here and we imagine that the issues will be worked out over time. It’s also totally free.

Shanghai startup that combines Slack, Dropbox, and Trello raises $5M from IDG

Teambition, the maker of a cloud-based collaboration and project management tool, announced today it secured a US$5 million series A round of funding led by IDG and followed by Vangoo Capital.

The Shanghai-based startup is a mix of Slack, Trello, Flowdock, and Dropbox. Every new project gets its own home page where team members can add tasks, share files, arrange meetings, and post updates. It’s available on the web, Android, and iOS in Chinese, English, and Japanese.

“Teambition offers a total solution on project collaboration, as most US products focus on a single problem,” founder Junyuan Qi says.

The new round of funding will be used for further expansion, which includes Southeast Asia, along with development of new and existing products. For now, most of Teambitions customers are in China and Japan.

Teambition says its now home to over one million projects run by both startups and established enterprises. They span several sectors such as advertising, manufacturing, education, and more

It’s uncommon for a Chinese startup to aim globally from the outset. Qi says, “Some of our customers are big companies with branches globally. Only by entering the global market can we satisfy their needs.” He adds, “The global market is more mature in terms of enterprise markets.”

Teambition monetizes using a freemium subscription model, where customers with more than 100 projects pay a monthly fee.

The startup received a pre-A series investment led by Gobi Partners and was inducted into this year’s Microsoft Ventures Accelerator.

24-year-old Qi founded Teambition in 2011. He previously founded an online community for people with similar health conditions to communicate.
