Elephone announces special flash sale, phones going from $12.12

Elephone (everyone’s favourite!) have announced that they will be having flash sales on the 12th, 16th, 17th and 18th of December, with devices such as the Elephone P8000, P6000 Pro, M2, S2 and S2 Plus going on sale for as low as $12.12 (Because 12th December, geddit?).

Elephone have yet to fully announce the details of this flash sale, so we still don’t know if there what other devices will be offered, if any at all. We’d also don’t know if smartphones are going to be the only devices going on sale, since Elephone also has a large number of other gadgets like e-cigars, action cameras and smartwatches.
What do you think about this sale? Are you looking forward to it, or would you prefer to have Elephone launch the Vowney before announcing more news? Tell us down in the comments below.Elephone 12.12 Seckill:http://www.elephone.hk/Event/DoubleTwelve

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Elephone has announced its latest affordable phone, the M3

elephone-m3-back
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Elephone has announced its latest affordable phone, the M3. Elephone hasn’t revealed all of the M3’s specs (the company hasn’t even provided a render of the entire device), but we know that the M3 is powered by MediaTek’s octa-core Helio P10 SoC and has a USB Type-C connector. It will also run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The Elephone will apparently have a price tag of US$99 in China, which will put it in direct competition with UMi’s Rome, which has a US$89 MSRP.

Elephone M3 looks very attractive for just $99

Hot on the heels of the Elephone M1 and M2 all metal business phones comes this bit of Elephone M3 news.
Just like the 2 previous releases Elephone have once again chosen an all metal construction for the body of the M3, looking at the renders its a nice looking handset with 2.5d glass (hopefully the phone will look this good when it is ready to ship out).
What will set this phone apart is the addition of previously flagship only features such as the inclusion of a USB type C charging port and the fact that it will ship with Android os6 Marshmallow.
Not much more is known about the phone except that it will feature a Mediatek Helio P10 (MT6755) processor and will be available in silver and gold and the price will be just $99 (£66)
Hopefully the screen and cameras on the Elephone M3 will be of decent quality, making this an attractive proposition for a second handset.
What do you think? the renders look good and the specs that we know so far seem pretty impressive for the minuscule price of just $99 (£66)
Please feel free to leave comments and questions below

Motorola extends Valentine’s Day savings through February 17th

A few weeks ago, Motorola introduced a big sale through the Motorola website in celebration of Valentine’s Day. The deal was scheduled to begin Monday, February 2nd and extend to Saturday, February 14th. As we approach the final days of the sale, Motorola has just announced the sale will now extend to Tuesday, February 17th at 11AM CT.

For the Valentine’s Day sale, Motorola is offering savings up to $100 with all purchases $499.99 and above, or $35 off all purchases $249.99 and above. For reference, the off-contract 16GB Moto X (2nd Generation) costs $399.99, so you’ll need to tack on another item to get you over that $499.99 price point. This can be any combination of gadgets, like the Moto X and Moto 360, a Moto X and a Moto Hint, two Moto 360s, or any number of other combinations.

Unfortunately, this deal excludes the Google Nexus 6, the Moto X (2nd Gen.) on Republic Wireless and the Moto Care Accident Protection Plan. If you’re interested in taking advantage of this sweet deal, either for yourself or your loved one, head to the Motorola link below.

Has anyone picked anything up from this Valentine’s Day sale?

Xiaomi to take tentative first step into US, but not by selling phones

Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra revealed today that the Chinese gadget maker will soon enter the US market for the first time, albeit in a very tentative and low-key way.

Speaking at Xiaomi’s ‘meet the media’ event in San Francisco, Barra ruled out launching Xiaomi smartphones or tablets in the US in 2015, but indicated that its Mi.com site will soon open up to American consumers with some of its accessories, reports The Verge. That means things like the Mi Band fitness tracker, Power Bank battery packs, and earphones.

Xiaomi sells a handful of its range of phones, tablets, and accessories in seven nations/areas in Asia, but the full product selection is available only in mainland China. Xiaomi’s Mi4 phone, which launched last summer in China, has so far landed in only one other market, debuting in India in January.

Barra indicated that issues like hardware certification, software testing, and logistical concerns mean that Xiaomi is not yet planning on bringing any smartphones or tablets to the US market.

Xiaomi co-founder Lin Bin was also at the San Francisco event. Neither he nor Barra addressed reporters’ questions on whether the decision was caused by patenting problems. A TechCrunch writer on the scene says that the same question was asked multiple times. Xiaomi’s weak patent portfolio has been under scrutiny for months after a dispute in India caused a temporary sales ban.

MerryBiz is here to process all your company’s expenses

Last year, we brought you the story of Locondo, Japan’s Rocket Internet-backed ecommerce store that saw three co-founders leave before Yusuke Tanaka, the last man standing, steadied the ship. The other day I caught up with Hiroki Kudo, one of those departed founders, to learn about his latest startup, MerryBiz.

MerryBiz specializes in processing expense receipts, a time-consuming yet inescapable part of office accounting. Depending on how many receipts will be processed, clients can purchase year-long plans varying from JPY 2,980 (US$25) to JPY 12,980 (US$108). Users collect their receipts and mail them to MerryBiz. There, staffers sort and scan the receipts, sending the pdfs to freelance workers around the country via Dropbox. The data is then input into excel sheets and sent back to the customer. “Invoices, bank books, salary slips – anything that is paper, you send it to us, we process it. It’s that simple,” says Kudo.

The niche service is fighting for customers with many other B2B accounting services and has only raised US$550,000 compared to well-heeled competitors like MoneyForward or Freee. Even so, in the smaller market of bookkeeping, MerryBiz is finding fans.

When the service went live in October 2012, it was receiving on average two envelopes and 100 receipts a week. Now, it can scan 10,000 receipts a day. Alliances with local professional service firms like the legal advice startup bengo4.com have generated increased demand.

Though MerryBiz’s team of 18 is now settled in an office in Omotesando, one of Tokyo’s trendiest districts, the businesses faced many challenges along the way. For nearly two years, until July 2014, the company did not have a web presence. All the customer service was done via phone calls and emails. In order to survive with limited resources prioritization was key – and making a website did not make the cut.Related:GroupBuy SEO Tools

Until the seed funding came in last year, Kudo had been bootstrapping the project, dating back to July 2011 when the company was formally founded. “I had liquidated all my savings, had used up most of my cash. I probably was a few months away from really going broke. I remember going to the ATM to withdraw US$50, and the exact same amount was on my balance,” he says.

Founder Hiroki Kudo is at the bottom left.

Kudo has displayed similar tenacity in becoming a starup founder. His first job was at IBM Japan, doing project management for financial institutions, Japanese megabanks, and global credit card companies. He eventually went to INSEAD for his MBA, becoming a management consultant afterwards. “I got fed up with strategic stuff because nothing gets really implemented. I wanted to get my hands dirty,” he says.Related:GroupBuy SEO Tools

After lending some of his expertise to a few startups around town, he took the plunge with Locondo. His tasks centered on order fulfilment, a position he requested in order to learn more about how to implement high-quality customer service. Ultimately, his time at the Rocket Internet company only lasted six months.

“There was a point where Rocket was really pushing for top line hires and started to going for deep discounts. They stopped focusing on customers. [They were] more focused on getting sales. That was not my focus, it was not why I joined the team,” Kudo explains, talking about his quick departure.

Kudo went back into consulting, but kept his eye on the startup world. The following year in 2011, he established MerryBiz’s corporate entity. After years of scouring job boards to find freelance bookkeepers and being in constant sales-mode to stay alive, the startup is positioning itself to take advantage of its growing reputation.

Kudo sees the immediate future playing out over three steps. Step one is to make sure that MerryBiz is the best at what it does in both quality and scale. Second is to add invoice management to the service so users can pay their clients immediately. Finally, he wants to move into more types of administrative work so MerryBiz can oversee more complicated issues like social security. This three part plan will also serve to get MerryBiz in the black.

To that end, he is trying to raise another round. Kudo expects to close it this year and is excited for the future. He feels like he can mostly move through steps one and two in 2015, leaving 2016 to be a “big year.”

ScreenPop brings picture messaging to your lock screen

Sending messages directly to someone’s lock screen isn’t a particularly new concept on Android, but not many apps out there let you send picture messages this way. ScreenPop, a new app from Locket, lets you send picture messages directly to your friends’ lock screens. Think of it like Snapchat. The app allows you to take a photo and spice it up with text, emojis and doodles if you’d like. Photos will pop up directly on your friends’ lock screens, and they can reply to the photo, “Like” the photo, or swipe to jump directly into the phone. The received photo disappears once you reply or unlock your device.

Just remember, this service should be used with caution. ScreenPop images are sent directly to the user’s device without giving them the option to open it or not. At least with Snapchat, users have to go to the app to open a Snap. ScreenPop will display images, no matter what they are, in plain sight for everyone to see. Despite the dangers, we have no doubt that this service will become widely popular in no time. So, if you’re interested, head to the Google Play link below to grab ScreenPop for free.

I’ve tried many methods to rip this. All of them failed. It doesn’t help that LeTV’s search can’t seem to find it.
To see, click hereSame-day update: Thanks to Vladimir Burnin, the video can be seen after the break.
Be aware this is more of ZOL’s Nokia N1 paid pimpery, so it’s unlikely to contain anything critical.
It doesn’t even show web browsing or video playback. One casual and one intensive game are briefly shown. There’s also a new sample from the back camera. That’s basically it.
