Asus Zenfone 4 A450CG goes on pre-order at Flipkart 

Asus has announced that it is finally ready to release the Zenfone 4 A450CG smartphone in the Indian market. The phone was originally unveiled in the country along with other Zenfone smartphones in early-July.

“In its quest to introduce appropriate device for each segment, ASUS is affirmative that further broadening their range will reiterate their focus in the country and their promise to deliver the incredible. The company presently has 3 smartphones in the market which have received path breaking response from the Indian Market,” Asus said in a statement.

Asus Zenfone 4 A450CG will be available for pre-order starting August 24 (mid-night) exclusively at Flipkart. There is no word on the shipping date right now. If you plan to pre-order the phone, keep an eye out at the Asus Zenfone 4 A450CG pages on Flipkart.

To remind you, Asus Zenfone 4 A450CG is 4.5-inch smartphone, which runs on Android 4.4 with Zen UI and comes with 8MP rear camera, 1750 mAh battery and 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2520 dual-core processor. Xiaomi to reveal Redmi 1S India release details

Xiaomi has started sending out invites for two events to the tech press in India, where it is expected to reveal details about availability of Redmi 1S smartphone in India. The company is hosting the first event in Bangalore on August 25, where its India office is situated, and the second event will be happening in New Delhi on August 26.

It is very likely that Redmi 1S release details will become clear on August 25 itself. We already know the pricing of the smartphone – INR 6,999.

Qualcomm Seen Getting China Royalties From Exports

"China continues to present significant opportunities for us, particularly with the rollout of 4G LTE, but also presents significant challenges, as our business practices continue to be the subject of an investigation by the China National Development and Reform Commission," Qualcomm said in its earnings release. "We also believe that certain licensees in China currently are not fully complying with their contractual obligations to report their sales of licensed products to us."

The wireless chip designer's royalty-payment dispute with Chinese smartphone makers has been an overhang on its stock. Qualcomm stock has fallen 8% since issuing its Q3 earnings results on July 24. Shares were flat, near 75, in early trading in the stock market today.

Because of Chinese payment collection uncertainty, Qualcomm recently excluded 215 million 3G and 4G devices — representing 16.5% of expected 2014 shipments — from its market estimates.

The China NDRC is conducting an anti-monopoly review involving Qualcomm. BMO Capital's Long, who says he recently met with Qualcomm executives, says Qualcomm is likely to garner some royalties from China.

"The situation in China remains murky," said Long in a new research report. "We believe the current (stock) valuation assumes almost no China royalties, which is, in our view, an unreasonable outcome, given the desire of the Chinese to export.

China's Smartphone Maker Coolpad Dives Deep Into E-Commerce

“Go online or go home” seems to be the ethos of retail in China these days. Even at the risk of having a lower profit margin, Chinese smartphone maker Coolpad is determined to charge ahead in the e-commerce battle.

Forty to sixty percent of its sales will come through e-commerce channels within two to three years, said CFO Jiang Chao of the Shenzhen-based company at a press conference on Thursday. In the first half of 2014, Coolpad sold three million smartphones online, accounting for 13% of the period’s total sales volume.

“Moving into e-commerce is not simply a change in sales channel. It is part of a revolution of future business model,” explained Chairman Guo Deying of the rationale for going all out on e-commerce. “We need to face the customers directly. We expect gross margins of hardware to continue to lower, [therefore] we hope to have an interactive relationship with our customers to grow our customer base. This business model is consistent with the broader trend.”

Chinese smartphone makers are increasing their presence in the global market. This year, we’ve already seen Lenovo Group and Huawei Technologies gain global market share, posing a threat to market leader Samsung Electronics 005930.SE +0.97%. Now, other lesser-known Chinese players are also trying to expand overseas.

 Coolpad, a smartphone maker based in Shenzhen, plans to spend millions of dollars this year to promote its brand in Southeast Asia, Europe and the U.S., its senior executive told The Wall Street Journal in a recent interview.

So why are the Chinese players all focusing on overseas?

“China’s smartphone market is getting saturated,” said BNP Paribas analyst Peter Yu. “If you want to keep growing, you have to look outside.”

Between 2011 and 2013, smartphone shipments in China nearly quadrupled, according to research firm IDC. Now, the rate of annual growth is expected to slow. Meanwhile, smartphone sales are rising sharply in emerging markets like India, Southeast Asia and Latin America, where many consumers are still replacing basic cellphones with smartphones. According to IDC, 89% of all mobile phones shipped in China in the first half of this year were smartphones. In India, smartphones accounted for only 28% of shipments in the same period.

For Chinese players, overseas expansion is a way to keep up their growth and, possibly, to make their business more profitable. “Price competition is too intense in China,” says IDC analyst Kiranjeet Kaur.
